Manuscript Submission Guidelines
- We want to publish full-length books; convention puts novels at approximately 50,000 words minimum, though word count can be flexible depending on genre.
- Novellas are not out of the question, but they must be marketable and of exceptional quality. Don’t get too hung up on word count alone.
- We are not interested in manifestos or political treatises from unknown persons; we are willing to consider works of this nature from established public figures or professional subject matter experts.
- We obviously are not averse to novels with an ideological bent, but fiction needn’t be heavy-handed. Oftentimes less is more.
- Depictions of harsh language, violence, or sexual content should be done tastefully and with meaningful context.
- Children’s books should have illustrations already in them before submission.
To be considered for publication, please begin by sending us a query package rather than a full manuscript. This allows us to quickly assess whether your project is the right fit before moving forward. The requirements differ slightly depending on the type of book you are submitting. The query package should include:
- A Query Letter (approx. 250–500 words) which includes a brief pitch of the work, a short author bio, and a note on why the project is a good fit for our us. Please also indicate the status of the book’s completeness.
- Fiction: State the genre and approximate word count.
- Academic work: Summarize your field of study and relevant academic background.
- Translation: Describe the original work (title, author, date, and significance), the source language, and your qualifications as a translator.
- A Synopsis providing a clear summary of the work’s content and structure.
- Fiction: 1–2 pages. Offer a concise but complete summary of the narrative arc, including the ending.
- Academic work: 2–5 pages. Supply a chapter-by-chapter outline or an extended abstract of the argument.
- Translation: 1–3 pages. Explain the scope of the work and why it is valuable to bring into English, noting whether this is the first translation or if others exist.
- A Manuscript Sample: (optional but recommended), usually 10–30 pages or 1–3 chapters. Choose a polished, representative excerpt that reflects the standard you would expect in print.
Once we get the query letter, our editorial team will take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to review it before coming to a decision on an expression of interest. We will at this point request the full manuscript. We may choose to take on a work for publication after review of the full manuscript by our team. At this point, we will assign an editor to work with you to finalize it, then take it through proofreading for another pair of eyes on the manuscript, followed by final formatting and cover design.
There is zero cost to authors: we are a traditional publisher and will carry all burdens, remitting royalties quarterly to our authors. However, that does mean that we need to be very selective with the books that we take on, evaluating for both content and general marketability.
